WHY EXECUTIVE FUNCTION CAN FEEL SO COMPLICATED

They Know What to Do. So Why Can’t They Always Do It?

You may work with children who can demonstrate a skill one day, in one setting, or with one adult, but struggle to access that same skill elsewhere.

They may know how to begin a task, but sit there without starting. They may understand the routine, but struggle when something changes. They may be able to plan, remember, regulate, or problem-solve sometimes, but not when demands increase.

It can be tempting to assume the skill simply hasn’t been learned yet.

But executive function is more dynamic than that.

A child’s ability to access and develop executive function skills is influenced by what is happening within the child and around the child.

Internal state, interoception, regulation, relationships, environment, task demands, and available supports can all change what a child is able to access in a particular moment.

That changes the questions we ask. Instead of only asking: “What executive function skill does this child need?” we can also begin asking: “What is helping or getting in the way of this child accessing and learning that skill?”

That is where the Executive Function Express™ begins.

A BODY-FIRST APPROACH TO EXECUTIVE FUNCTION

Executive Function Begins with Access

Executive function skills do not operate in isolation.

Before a child can plan, initiate, shift, remember, regulate a response, or persist through something difficult, they need access to the systems that support those skills.

The Executive Function Express™ provides a practical framework for understanding the many factors that can influence that access. Rather than looking only at the skill a child is struggling with, you’ll learn to consider the interaction between:

Body & Internal State • Interoception • Regulation • Executive Function • Environment • Relationships • Task Demands • Supports

This helps us move beyond simply identifying what a child is struggling to do and begin understanding why it may be difficult in that moment and what we can do to help.

Executive function begins with access, not compliance.

When we understand access, we can make more informed decisions about when to support the body, when to modify the environment, when to scaffold a task, and when a child is ready to learn and practice a new executive function skill.
