The Executive Function Institute Clinical System

One Connected Clinical System for Executive Function

Executive function doesn't happen in isolation. Neither should the tools you use to support it.

The Executive Function Institute Clinical System brings executive function, interoception, regulation, assessment, clinical reasoning, and treatment together, so you can better understand the child in front of you and know what to do next.

Support access. Teach skills. Increase participation.

The Whole Child Changes the Clinical Picture

A student may have difficulty starting a task, remembering what comes next, shifting when plans change, organizing materials, managing time, or persisting when something becomes difficult.

Executive function may be part of the picture.

But it may not be the whole picture.

Interoception, regulation, sensory processing, relationships, environment, task demands, previous experiences, strengths, and current state can all influence participation. At the same time, executive function skills are developing. A child may need explicit teaching, meaningful practice, and opportunities to build new skills.

The EFI Clinical System brings the pieces together.

Rather than looking at executive function as a set of isolated skills, we consider what the child can do, what they are still learning, what may be influencing access, and what supports and teaching will help them participate and grow.

Because meaningful intervention isn't only about supporting access, and it isn't only about teaching skills.

It's about understanding what this child needs, in this moment, to move forward.

Executive function is invisible.

Interoception is internal.

Regulation is complex.

A child's experience may be difficult to put into words.

So we make it visible.

Knowing Executive Function Is Involved Isn't Enough.

You see the student who can't get started.

The student who knows what to do but can't seem to do it.

The student who loses track halfway through.

The student who falls apart when the plan changes.

The student who does well one day and struggles with the same task the next.

And you're expected to figure out why.

  • Is it an executive function skill that needs to be taught?

  • Is the skill there but difficult to access in this situation?

  • Is interoception or regulation part of the picture?

  • Are the environment or task demands making participation harder?

  • Does the student need support, explicit teaching, a different approach, or some combination of all three?

That's the hard part.

You don't need another list of executive function strategies.

You need a way to make sense of what you're seeing and decide what to do next.

That's what the EFI Clinical System was built to help you do.
